WatchUseek uses new forum software since a week or so. Looks great,Omega, what have you done - Fratellowatches.com, but I still have to find my way in navigating it I guess. The former software was quite ‘flat’,rolex replika, which lacked flexibility, but was just simple and easy to use and it was almost impossible to lose overview.

Anyway, I finally had some time on my hands to fiddle around with it a bit and to participate in some discussions and threads again (since I am co-moderating the Omega forum together with Jean-Marie).

A few times per week there is something called a ‘roll call’ at the Public Forum,U-Boat Watches, I don’t think it is useful to participate every time but today I joined. Click here to join as well.

A few weeks ago I was in New York City and met with Bill Sohne (collector of fine time pieces and moderator of the Omega forum of PuristsPro) for a coffee and a small chat about watches. We discussed a lot of watches, including this Omega Seamaster Professional Chronograph in titanium (ref.2298.80) he bought, also known as the SeMPC Ti. Bill told me that during his long friendship with the legendary Chuck Maddox, he had to hear about this SeMPC Ti every once in a while, as it was one of Chuck’s favourite watches to wear or at least to have in his ‘rotation programme’. Also, Bill told me that he did a write-up on this watch just recently for his forum, on the 2nd anniversary of Chuck Maddox passing (click here to read it) on the 12th of May.

As Chuck once wrote for a mailing list regarding Omega watches: “……there are some that are kept close at hand because they are favorites.  I have a couple of 3-position cases that I have “go-to” watches,  I have three Omega Go-To’s: My SeMPC (my all weather watch of choice if the forecast is for heavy weather), my 145.012-67 c.321 Pre-Moon, and my 1950′s no-Model Omega square pusher (mainly because it’s bracelet is of a length I can wear it on either wrist). “Listening to Bill, I realized that I recognized his story pretty well. From 1999 till 2008, I had a lot of contact with Chuck Maddox. Mostly by e-mail and AIM and not always with the same frequency, unfortunately. He had mentioned his SeMPC Ti to me, but as it was made out of titanium and has this ETA/Valjoux 7750 movement, I didn’t pay much attention to it. Both are not my style, at least I thought so. In 2000, I tried the stainless steel version of this watch, but besides being beyond my budget, it was too thick to fit under my cuff. I went for the ‘James Bond’ ref.2531.80 (which I reviewed here, in 2000) instead.

When I got back home from New York,Copy watches, I immediately started looking around for a SeMPC Ti diver watch. I also visited the ChronoMaddox website and read this article Chuck wrote in 1999, about this exact same watch. His enthusiasm about this watch works very catching, at least to me. In the following quoted paragraph, Chuck sums up the ref.2298.80 SeMPC Ti:

“The Seamaster Pro Chronograph is attractive because it is the watch that “has it all”… Chronometer rating, Automatic Winding mechanical movement with excellent durability and parts availability, Chronograph,rolex replica, Calendar, Helium Release Valve, Sapphire Crystal, an absolutely incredible bracelet w/divers extension & twin push button safety release, non-slip caseback, available in a variety of material’s: dial/bezel colors,replika rolex, great water resistance rating, and the show stopper: the unmatched ability to operate the chronograph underwater without compromising the Water Resistance of the watch. No other mechanical watch boasts that feature. After a day of strawling the auction sites, Chrono24 and a list of on-line dealers, I actually found one on an on-line Dutch marketplace. Located at a jeweller store nearby my home town, I immediately made an appointment to go there and check-out this SeMPC Ti.

To make a long story short, I bought it for a fair price, including the box and booklets. No warranty card unfortunately, but the 6,00,xxxx number tells me it is dated 1996 (correct me if I’m wrong). Although I thought that this watch would be a nice homage to Chuck Maddox, I actually find myself wearing it quite a lot.

The bracelet looks a bit out dated (introduced in 1993), it wears comfortable. Same goes for the titanium, although I don’t like watches that are too light for their size, this one is actually still a heavy weight at 142.7 grams. At least compared to my other time pieces. The Valjoux 7750 movement was probably the biggest hiccup, but the wobble is not as annoying as I thought it would be. For the readers unfamiliar with this movement, it only winds in one direction and the rotor spinning in the other (free) direction results in a wobble on the wrist you might feel and could consider it annoying.

It seems that I can live with all these facts after all Chuck was right in his summary quoted above, it is a chronograph that has it all.

Although the late Chuck Maddox will forever be linked to Speedmasters and vintage Heuers, together with Bill Sohne I consider this ref.2298.80 SeMPC to be the Chuck Maddox Homage Watch.

When thinking of Bell & Ross many relate the company to the popular and conspicuous designs of the BR “Instruments.” It is pretty obvious that these square watches were responsible for exploding the manufacturer’s popularity, but Bell & Ross was very active even before the BR timepieces existed. Bell & Ross had built a solid collection of more traditional watches, of which one of the best sellers was the Vintage 123. The Vintage 123, attracted many watch enthusiasts thanks to its palpable high quality, simple and clean design, and great value. These are all reasons why it is still in demand today.

Presently the Vintage 123 is attracting many clients, albeit different from those who are attracted to the BR Instruments. The first aspect about the Vintage 123 that captivates watch enthusiasts is its purity. The watch is well designed. It is simple and clean without any frills and the same is also apparent on the movement’s elements within the case. The stainless steel case is 39mm in diameter. Some may consider this small by today’s standards, but if you can easily picture yourself wearing a Rolex Submariner (39-40mm) or an AP Royal Oak (39mm), then you will not. The Bell & Ross Vintage 123 is not an attention grabber. Unlike its young BR cousins, it is content with looking sharp in a quiet way. When wearing it you are likely to receive the majority of compliments from those who are knowledgeable about watches, and the exhibition window on the case back can be used to impress the others. The Vintage 123 is the definition of “classic” and at the same time demonstrates that to be classic, something must stay fashionable indefinitely.

Our friends over at the German Rolex Forum (Das Rolex Forum) are clearly having fun with this “What are you wearing?”-thread, hence the 469 pages (and counting) filled with the most beautiful watches AND photos. Fratello Visits ABP Paris

ABP Paris (Atelier du Bracelet Parisien) is a manufacturer of the world’s most exclusive leather watchstraps. Although you can order most straps via their web shop, the Fratellowatches team decided to visit their workshop in the center of Paris.

ABP is currently lead by Yann Perrin and is a typical family business and have been around for 15 years. A few years ago, due to ever growing business, they had to move to a bigger workshop on the Place du Marché Saint-Honoré where they are still located as of today. Let us tell you, that with approximately a staff of 10 persons, we foresee another move in a couple of years.

All straps that ABP sell are – of course – made by hand and specified to the customer’s demand. All sorts of leather are available, including some very exclusive ones like beaver tail, frog, toad and stingray. In the past, they were able to work with elephant and seal skin as well, but law forbids them to use it anymore. Alligator straps suddenly sounds very ‘normal’ once you step into the world of Yann Perrin and his co-workers. ABP used over 50 species of animal skin and they come from five difference tanneries from all over the world. ABP is unable to perform their own tannery because of the very strict Parisien law which doesn’t allow them to work with chemicals in the center of Paris. They have hundreds of colors to choose from and the stitching can be done in over 500 colors. Also, if you bring your own favorite pair of shoes for example, you can have your watch strap made that it will perfectly match them. Even the patina Santoni shoes that are so popular these days. Of course, you need to visit the ABP workshop in order to have these custom paint jobs done.

Because of the perfect location (near the Place Vendome) of ABP,watches you, they are able to supply to a lot of the high-end jewelers and watch boutiques located nearby. Sometimes a standard watch strap will not fit the wrist of the customer or isn’t up to his/her standards. Then, these boutiques will ask ABP to design and create a strap that will fit the customer’s watch perfectly. Of course,buy wrist watch, this has to be done to the very exact specifications of the watch in question as it should at least be as good as the original watch strap. In case a standard strap is too short for someone’s wrist, ABP will create an exact duplicate of the original strap but longer.

ABP also manufacturers straps for the smaller and independent watch brands when they only need a one-off or a just small batch of straps. However, you won’t see watches from the big brands delivered from the factory with an ABP strap.  ABP wants to remain exclusive and be able to guarantee exclusivity.

For a lot of watches that come with a stainless steel bracelet  (e.g. Rolex) ABP has developed a method to fit the original lugs as good as possible so their won’t be too much space left between the strap and the case of the watch. Also, in 99% of the cases, ABP can make the strap fit the original deployant buckle.

PAM339 - The First Panerai Composite Timepiece

During the SIHH 2010, Officine Panerai introduced the PAM339, a Radiomir Composite Marina Militare 8 Giorni (=days) in 47mm. A watch that reverts to historical models using state-of-the-art techniques for manufacturing watch cases. The composite material is a result of ceramization of aluminium and is harder and lighter than steel or titanium for instance. Sometimes, you need to pave the way for something new. Therefore, my IWC Ingenieur 3227 01 is for sale. I have written several times about this watch (here and here for example), but there comes a time of letting go some of your collection pieces to get something else.

This type of Ingenieur isn’t in production anymore and is therefore probably the ‘shortest in production’-Ingenieur model, from 2005-2009. List price was 5.900,italian leather bags supplier,= Euro which was a bit steep, I am asking 4.100,= Euro. Offers are welcome though, but if it doesn’t fetch enough, it will remain to be in my collection of course.

The watch comes complete with box,discount wholesale handbags, papers, booklets, IWC soft strap etcetera. As complete as it left authorized IWC dealer Ace & Dik in Amsterdam in 2008. Not on this picture is the carton outer box, but it is there

Since last weekend (27th of June), the first Dutch Watch Heritage event opened its doors in Schoonhoven, The Netherlands. Schoonhoven is (in The Netherlands) famous for its jewellery and horology school and its museum. The museum, lead by Gemke Jager, hosts the Dutch Watch Heritage event from the 27th of June till the 5th of July.

The main idea behind the Dutch Watch Heritage is to display the (often hidden) horological treasures that we have in The Netherlands, owned by private collectors or aficionados. This first event has more than 100 watches up for display, covering the last 100 years of watchmaking and including watches like the first Patek Philippe Nautilus, an incredible collection of vintage Rolex sportswatches in superb condition, the first series of Bulova Accutron watches, a collection of highly sought-after Omega Speedmaster models, including models from the first few years of introduction (1957),watches u boat, the very first?Ǭ�Heuer Monaco, one of the first Breiling Navitimers (limited to 126 pieces)?Ǭ�and a lot of all Seiko Kinetic models.

One of the Dutch Watch Heritage sponsors was Ace Jewelers, who had a few displays with Omega, Tag Heuer, IWC, Doxa and Breitling watches. Alon, CEO of Ace Jewelers, asked me if I was able to help him out on sunday the 28th of June. This day was exclusively for clients of the main sponsor of the event, Lexus.

Approximately 500 visitors came by to take a look at the large number of iconic wrist watches, watchmakers who were demonstrating their skills, joining seminars on iconic watches by Mr.?Ǭ�Gaemers?Ǭ�and – ofcourse – looking at the current models of these iconic watches in one of the displays of Ace Jewelers. Like the current Omega Speedmaster Professional, the 40th Anniversary model, the current Breitling Navitimer, current TAG Heuer Monaco etc.

A very interesting watch was that of Van Ree. A new Dutch brand that introduced a watch with your own DNA sample and DNA coding in the watch. If you are buying a Van Ree watch, a DNA sample will be taken. The crystalized DNA sample will be embedded inside the pusher on 4 o’clock and the DNA coding will be lasered into the crystal on the backside, which also gives you a nice view on the movement (by Technotime). Dani?ɬ�l van Ree joined the Dutch Watch Heritage with a small booth, presenting his Personal DNA Watch. Dani?ɬ�l van Ree (pictured below) is an experienced watchmaker, who got (a.o.) his education on watchmaking at big names like Renaud & Papi (Audemars Piguet). I love these watch events, and I am happy that in these times of credit crunches, there are still parties willing to sponsor these events, like Lexus and Ace Jewelers. Also, without the contribution of several private collectors, it wouldn’t be possible at all to have a Dutch Watch Heritage event.

If you have the possibility to visit Schoonhoven these coming days (till the 5th of July), I suggest you’ll do so. It is worth the trip for watch aficianados and collectors.

This coming weekend,rolex watch replica, I will visit Schoonhoven with some of my watch friends, this time as a visitor, to have a good look around and discuss these horological icons.
